When you use your Pyramid Federal Credit Union debit card to make a purchase, don’t use the 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). This is safer and provides you with Visa purchase protection. When you make a debit card purchase without using the PIN, this is called "Signature Debit".
How to use Signature Debit
1. When asked for the PIN while making a purchase, press Cancel
2. Select Credit rather than Debit when using your debit card. For larger purchases, you may be asked to sign. This is still a debit transaction!
Signature debit causes the transaction to be processed on the Visa network, which means you receive Visa’s zero liability purchase protection benefit! Visa gives you certain rights to dispute the payment through Visa back to the merchant when you transact on their network. It’s good to have Visa in your corner!
If you use the PIN, your transaction winds up on a different network (not Visa’s), which is why you don't get the protection when you use the PIN.
Finally, using your debit card to make purchases without entering the PIN is a bit more secure than using PIN-based debit purchases. If someone is trying to steal your PIN on that point of sale terminal, not using it prevents that!
